Finalist from the Tableland

A Tableland innovation designed to better support the management of wildfire hazards and responses is a finalist for the Australian Government's Excellence in e-Government award.

The Atherton Tablelands Geographical Information Service's Northern Queensland Wildfire Mitigation Project was deemed to bring innovation, accessibility and transformation to government services.

The ATGIS innovation provides online mapping tools for wildfire stakeholders and is provided free to Queensland Fire and Rescue Service personnel and rural fire volunteers.

It is also used by Department of Environment and Resources employees and local governments across North Queensland.

ATGIS, a business unit within the Tablelands Regional Council, is the only local government body in Australia selected as a finalist with the award due to be presented at a ceremony in Sydney later this month.

ATGIS co-ordinator Alistair Hart said many people were involved in getting the program up and running.

"This award was only possible through the assistance of the wildfire stakeholders that have all worked with us and embraced our mapping tools and for this we would like to thank them," he said.

"I am thrilled our hard work has been recognised."
