Mappers show way ahead

Atherton Tablelands G.I.S. has received a Commendation in the People and Community category of the Queensland Spatial Excellence Awards for their work in developing a range of maps and online mapping tools.

These tools are provided at no cost to Rural Fire Service volunteers, Queensland Fire and Rescue Service employees and other stakeholders including Department of Natural Resources and Water’s fire management unit and local governments across the region.

GIS co-ordinator Alistair Hart said the result was better information to support wildfire response and management of wildfire hazards, to protect life and property across Northern Queensland.

He said the awards were presented at the recent Queensland Spatial Conference, where ATGIS was recognized for its
innovative project, funded

through the Natural Disaster Mitigation Program, by State and Federal Governments and the Tablelands Regional Council.

“This award was only possible though the assistance of the wildfire stakeholders who have all worked with us and embraced our mapping tools, and for this we would like to thank them,” he said.

“The dedication of the team at ATGIS has allowed us to deliver groundbreaking mapping services to wildfire stakeholders. I am thrilled that our hard work has been recognized through this commendation.”

Mr Hart said Atherton Tablelands G.I.S. provided geographic information services, including maps and aerial imagery, to industry, community and government, to stimulate local economies and improve community outcomes.
